RLST 162 PO - Modern Jewish Philosophy Introduces Jewish philosophy in the modern period, beginning with early modern attempts to define Judaism against secular society, and its evolution into contemporary modern and postmodern theories about the role of dialogue with the other in the formation of the individual. Texts by Spinoza, Mendelssohn, Hermann Cohen, Martin Buber and Emmanuel Levinas will be taken up closely. Other authors, literary and philosophical, will be read for context. CWS, PRT, MES.
