FREN 155 SC - Nature/Culture; Government/Utopia: Political Writings of the 18th Century A study of attempts by 18th-century authors from Montesquieu to the Revolution to describe ideal forms of social and political organization, as well as “natural” alternatives to “cultural” systems. Political writings by Diderot, Rousseau, and Voltaire, and articles of the Encyclopédie, excerpts from L’Esprit des lois, and the Voyage de Bougainville will be discussed during the first half of the course; the latter half will be devoted to texts from the Revolutionary period, including selections from Danton, Robespierre, Sade, and Babeuf. Satisfies the pre-1900 requirement. Taught in French.
Prerequisite(s): FREN 044 or equivalent. Course Credit: 1.0
