ARHI 156 SC - Indian Miniature Painting from Landscapes to Erotica

This seminar explores miniature painting styles in India from the sixteenth century to the present, spanning the Deccan sultanate and the British Empire. Incorporating a range of academic methods and perspectives, students will learn to identify and historically situate paintings of diverse styles, schools, regions, and periods, from landscape to erotica. We will analyze primary and secondary source materials, including films, while paying particular attention to the historical conditions that constrain the study of Indian painting and construct the academic disciplines of South Asian and Islamic art history.
