FREN 127 SC - Films de Femmes: French Contemporary Women Directors The first film director ever in the history of narrative cinema was a French woman, Alice Guy-Blaché who, starting in 1896, made over a thousand films. Even though early precursors like Guy-Blaché were often erased from film history, women directors in France have a long tradition to draw from. It is this tradition of women film-making that we will explore in this course, focusing in particular on a new generation of women directors who today are revitalizing contemporary French cinema. Directors to be studied will include: Dulac, Duras, Varda, Akerman, Kurys, Sciamma, Denis, Zlotowski, Labrune, Maïwenn, Jaoui, Hansen-Love, Quillevéré, Benguigui.
Course Credit: 1.0 Offered: Every three years
