FREN 165 SC - From Mermaids to Catwomen: Animal Transformations in French Literature and Culture This course will investigate shifting perspectives on animals in French literature, art, and society from the Middle Ages to today. We will examine allegorical animals in Le Bestiare, philosophical debates about animals (Montaigne, Descartes), the connections between evolution and Impressionism, and the myth of woman-to-animal metamorphoses (Rachilde, Darrieussecq). Satisfies the pre-1900 requirement.
