ASAM 171 PZ - Visual Culture at the Margins This course will examine various forms of visual culture produced by, through, and within the intersections of aesthetics
and marginality. We will approach the theme of “margins” in multiple and overlapping ways: (1) work produced by those
who occupy marginalized positions in relation to dominant society (race, class, gender, sexuality); (2) marginalized forms
of cultural production that exist outside the “official” sphere of institutionally sanctioned art, particularly ephemeral works
located on the body, in public spaces, and over the internet; (3) work that push us to think about the margins of our
aesthetic perception and our patience as an audience.
