HIST 197R SC - The Histories of Los Angeles
This class investigates the histories of Los Angeles. Histories in plural because the people who have lived in the city/region and shaped it have experienced it in very different ways. We will look into the factors and actors that have created and recreated Los Angeles since its founding in 1781, but paying attention mostly to the 1870s and forward. The course will touch on issues of labor, city boosterism and promotion, racial and spatial inequalities, riots/urban uprisings, changing demographies, and more.
