CORE 002 SC - Old New Media Beginning with photography in the early nineteenth century and attending primarily to telegraphy, telephony, radio, television, and video, this seminar explores the history of the fascination, fear, and peculiar associations that have accompanied new technological developments. Do telephones provide direct lines to the next world? Are radio waves signals from Martians? Do new technologies help us communicate better with (and, consequently, understand) ourselves? This course uses fiction, nonfiction, film, and paranormal engagements to explore historical efforts in Europe and the United States to come to terms with new technologies and the kinds of communication they appear to provide.
