HIST 115 SC - The Making of Leviathan This course examines the origins and dynamics of the early modern state. Drawing on theoretical texts and historical monographs, we will study the empirical problem of how the modern state became the dominant form of political organization in the world. In addition, we will examine the theoretical debate that has long raged over the nature of the modern state and the reasons for its emergence.
