FREN 143 SC - Theater and Revolution Theatrical performance was a crucial feature of the French Revolution, but what made it “revolutionary?” How was drama tied to concerns over democracy, equality, and citizenship? Plays by Chénier, Gouges, Maréchal and others will inform discussion early in the semester. Next, to critically assess the complicated legacy of the 1790s, we will turn to its depiction in work by Mnouchkine, Condé, and Diop. Finally, the semester will culminate with staged readings of scenes from the plays studied. Conducted in French.
