CORE 002 SC - The Construction of Kinship Using texts from the fields of poetry, fiction, Marxism, psychoanalysis, post-colonial theory and post-structuralism, this course explores the ways that family and other social bonds that most of us take for granted are shaped by hegemonic forces. Texts include Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, “Mama’s Baby, Papa’s Maybe” by Hortense Spillers, The Sympathizer, a recent Pulitzer Prize winner by Viet Thanh Nguyen, Dawn, a science fiction novel by Octavia Butler, Look, a book of poems by Iranian-American poet Solmaz Sharif, and excerpts from Franz Fanon’s Black Skin White Mask.
