CORE 003 SC - The Sexuality of Citizenship in the U.S This course will examine contemporary discussions around sexuality and citizenship in the United States while providing a genealogical framework that contextualizes our present understanding of what it means to be a sexual citizen. Looking specifically at four key moments in the twenty-first century that centered public debates around “miscegenation,” same-sex marriage, immigration, and “don’t ask/don’t tell,” this course will trace the varied and often intertwined histories of these debates as they emerged in the nineteenth-century. Through analyses of literary, legal, historical, and theoretical texts, this course will critically examine the role of sexuality in the construction of American citizens.
