FREN 123 SC - Representations of the Self: From Rousseau to Lévi-Strauss An examination of autobiography and its claim to autonomy as a literary genre. The point of departure for the course will be a selection of the autobiographical writings of Rousseau. Other texts to be studied will include works by Stendhal, Valles, Gide, and Sartre. We will also discuss contemporary developments in the genre that are taking it in a completely nontraditional direction. This course meets the pre-1900 requirement. All students wishing to enroll in French language courses must take the Language Placement Test. Only those students who have had no more than one semester of high school French are exempt from taking this examination; they may enroll in FREN 001 SC - Introductory French . The lower-division program in French studies is part of Northern Colleges’ Joint French Program. Conversation groups are conducted by a native French speaker for all lower-division courses; hours are to be arranged.
