FREN 154 SC - The 18th Century Novel: Experimentations in Form

The 18th century in France marked one of the great periods in the development of the novel. The vitality characteristic of this genre was due to a great extent to the novelists’ awareness of narrative techniques and to their willingness to experiment with diverse modes of novelistic form. In this course, problems of narration will be studied in the works of L’Abbe Prevost, Voltaire, Diderot, Rousseau, Laclos, and Sade. This course meets the pre-1900 requirement. All students wishing to enroll in French language courses must take the Language Placement Test. Only those students who have had no more than one semester of high school French are exempt from taking this examination; they may enroll in FREN 001 SC - Introductory French . The lower-division program in French studies is part of Northern Colleges’ Joint French Program. Conversation groups are conducted by a native French speaker for all lower-division courses; hours are to be arranged.FREN 044
