CORE 003 SC - History and Memory This course is about histories in the present. What is the relationship between individual and collective memories and history—what happened in the past and the stories we tell? All history is created in the present and says as much about that present as about the past. We will examine public representations in museums, memorials, movies and other contexts, focusing on official memory, vernacular memory, remembering and forgetting, digital remembrance, historical amnesia, counter memory, and the development of identity –individual, communal and national. Readings will focus on topics such as the U.S. Civil War, the Holocaust, the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, AIDS activism, tourism, cultural heritage, and reparations for historic wrongs.
