MUS 121 SC - Music of the Spirits: Hakka, Hawaiian and Tewa Pueblo Indian This course will explore three sacred musical cultures: Hakka mountain songs and the Unicorn dance, Hawaiian hula kahiko and auana and Tewa Pueblo ritual dance ceremonies. We will assess how systemic discrimination and exploitation of Asians, Pacific Islanders and Native Americans impacted these musical practices. Readings draw upon writings and interviews by minority scholars speaking about their own cultures, as well as drawing on secondary sources. Formerly Music of the Spirits: Hawaiian, Balinese and Tewa Pueblo Indian.
