CORE 010A SC - Music & Power

This course examines how music has been employed to shape society and particularly how imbalances of power have been maintained or redressed through musical means. The course begins by interrogating the terms music and power, then examines how the practice of music deploys power, ideology, and coercion by considering specific examples, and finally investigates how larger shifts in the sociopolitical, cultural, and technological arenas have influenced the production of music.
