CORE 010A SC - Performing the Nation

Cultural forms that affirm and create a sense of national identity sustain the modern nation-state. This course examines music, films, shows, visual arts, US presidential inaugurations, and Olympic ceremonies from the US and various European and Asian nations, focusing on how they promote a particular vision of the nation. Together we will explore how these cultural forms represent and construct nations, prescribe our understanding of them, and encourage participation in their perpetuation.
