CORE 010A SC - Speed

This course will consider the concept of speed in art, literature, film, video and everyday life. Is speed a relative term or a term that can only be understood as self-standing, or as a product of modernity? What is the relation of speed and mobility to narrative? We will begin exploring the possibility of speed in the ancient world, then we’ll move to the nineteenth-century with the spread of the railroad, the invention of cinema, and mass production & forms of social mobility; and speed in the early 20th century, with movements such as Italian futurism. Finally, we will examine speed in contemporary culture, from “alternative spaces” to cyberspace.
