CORE 010A SC - Self and State This course explores the relationship between the individual and the state in the Western World. We will examine how the state became a powerful and often dangerous institution, capable of providing public goods as well as committing atrocities. We will also examine how the articulation of state power was bound up with certain conceptions of selfhood: that is, what state development implies about freedom, unfreedom, and the changing experience of selfhood in the West.
Please refer to the course schedule on the Scripps Portal for current course offerings and details.
