The Russian/Russian and East European Studies majors are offered at Pomona College and may be available to Scripps students. Please consult with the appropriate department chair (or equivalent) at the home college to discuss specific major/minor requirements. Scripps students who declare this major must complete a senior thesis. In addition to having a faculty major adviser in this discipline, Scripps students must maintain a primary Scripps faculty adviser.
The objective of a major in Russian is to provide a thorough foundation in the Russian language and to develop a sophisticated understanding of Russian culture and history in European and global contexts. To further an awareness of Russia’s rich cultural tradition and the country’s continuing role as a major player on the world stage, departmental courses are often interdisciplinary in approach, encouraging students to explore literature, film, politics, history, art, music and cultural studies. Associated courses in a range of disciplines at The Claremont Colleges complement the department’s offerings. The program offers two majors. Students may elect to major in Russian with an emphasis on literature and culture; or they may choose to major in the interdisciplinary field of Russian and East European Studies.
Please refer to the Pomona College catalog for major and minor requirements
