Associate Professors Arteaga, Bacsan, González, Morales, Sanjuán-Pastor, Vega

This is an interdisciplinary major that draws on the exceptional offerings of The Claremont Colleges, especially at Scripps and Pomona College where the major shares a senior seminar. At Scripps, Professors Chancy, Bacsan, Alcenat and Forster offer courses addressing the Caribbean, Arteaga and Morales are specialists in the Andean region, and Alcalá, González, Perez de Mendiola, Sanjuán-Pastor, and Vega teach in languages, culture and the arts. Vega and Forster offer the introductory courses at Scripps. The expertise of the faculty has expanded from its traditional focus on Mexico to include South America, Central America and the Caribbean. Caribbean literature courses may also be found at Pitzer and CMC, and environmental and media studies that focus on Latin America at Pitzer. Pomona offers a number of relevant art history courses.Students interested in the major or minor should contact the Program Chair, Professor Cindy Forster, to confirm their academic advisor who will assist the student in selecting a course of study. Study abroad is encouraged, but not required. Some students elect to spend two semesters abroad in different countries in the Caribbean and Latin America. Study abroad courses in this hemisphere for which the student receives credit may satisfy requirements in the major if they address Latin America and the Caribbean.
