Italian Studies Major

Requirements for the Major


A major in Italian Studies requires a minimum of eight courses plus senior thesis. Prerequisites for the major are: ITAL 001 , ITAL 002 , and ITAL 033 

  • ITAL 044 Advanced Italian: Readings in Literature and Civilization  
  • Seven additional courses related to Italy, selected from the following list or approved by the major adviser. Of these additional courses, a minimum of four must be taken at the Claremont Colleges. 
    • two literature courses (one may be taught in English, the other should be upper division Italian, taught at Scripps;
    • two history courses;
    • two art history courses;
    • one general course related to Italy.
  • A senior thesis

Students are urged to take as many upper-division courses as possible for the Italian Studies major. Students normally will find it necessary to fulfill some of these requirements at other accepted institutions or programs abroad. Students are required to consult with department faculty before studying abroad in order to better understand how course equivalencies will be determined.
