Requirements for the Major
Scripps offers a sociocultural anthropology major that requires a minimum of eight courses, plus the two semester senior seminar and thesis sequence (ANTH190 and ANTH191).
Introductory Requirements:
Students must take the following two introductory courses as early as possible during the major:
Area Requirements:
1. Methodology
One methods course to be selected in consultation with the major adviser, preferably taken prior to study abroad.
- ANTH105 SC , PZ, or PO Field Methods in Anthropology or a methods course offered during study abroad
2. Theory
- ANTH153 SC , PZ, or PO History of Anthropological Theory
3. Breadth and Electives
- An additional four courses in cultural anthropology at any Claremont College (to bring the total to eight), not including ANTH190 and ANTH191. This may also include up to three courses taken during study abroad.
Senior Seminar and Thesis:
Honors Requirements:
A student who wishes to graduate with honors in anthropology must:
- Achieve a minimum grade point average of 11.0 (A-) in the major;
- Earn a grade of A on the thesis; and
- Present their thesis publicly at a venue to be determined with their first reader.
The student will be expected to produce a more substantial thesis than those not working on honors. A student may elect to attempt honors in anthropology by the end of fall semester of the senior year in consultation with the first reader, who must be an anthropologist at Scripps. Honors theses must have two readers; the second may be selected from faculty in any discipline at any of the Claremont Colleges.
