Environmental Analysis Major (EA)

Environmental Science Specialized Field:

A major in Environmental Analysis (Science track) requires a minimum of 14 courses plus seminar and a senior thesis. Students interested in this major/track should discuss the eligibility of specific courses with their academic adviser and with EA science faculty.

• Introductory Core: EA 010 PO , and either EA 020 PO  or EA 086 PZ  or POLI136 PO .
• Introductory Biology: BIOL043L KS  and BIOL044L KS , or BIOL042L KS  and BIOL044L KS .
• CHEM014L KS  and CHEM015L KS , or  CHEM040L KS  and CHEM015L KS , or  CHEM029L KS , or CHEM042L KS .
• At least one introductory Earth Science course (e.g., EA 055L KS , GEOL020  PO, or approved alternate; see Pomona College Catalog for GEOL020  PO details).
• Six upper division EA-approved science courses selected in consultation with Keck Science Environmental Science faculty to include:
  • One or more in ecology (e.g., BIOL135L KS ,  BIOL138 KS ,  BIOL146L KS ,  BIOL169L KS , and others); and
  • One or more that emphasizes Earth Science (e.g.,  EA 100L KS ,  EA 103 KS ,  EA 104 KS , and others); and
  • Three of the courses must have a laboratory requirement.

     Note: These six courses may be cross-listed but normally may not double-count for another science major.

• One environmental policy course from the list of approved Courses in Environmental Analysis .
• An environmentally focused Study Abroad and Global Education (SAGE) program is strongly recommended.
• Senior Capstone (two courses) to include one of the following options:

1. A one-semester thesis in Environmental Analysis ( EA 191 KS ), and either EA 190 PO  (generally offered in Spring) or EA 150 PZ  (generally offered in Fall), or an alternative course approved by the Environmental Analysis science faculty.
2. A two-semester thesis in Environmental Analysis ( EA 188L KS / EA 190L KS , or EA 189L KS / EA 190L KS )

• Students must take at least one class in statistics or the application of quantitative methods to environmental problems. This requirement may be satisfied by taking an approved class with a quantitative focus as one of the six upper-division EA science courses. Alternatively, students may take an approved non-science course in statistics in addition to the other major requirements.

EA Non-Science Tracks:

EA Majors in Non-Science Tracks through Pitzer or Pomona must specify a Track and develop a course plan in close consultation with a faculty member in that Track at the chosen College (e.g., PZ or PO).

Required EA Core of all Non-Science Tracks:

• Minimum 3-course EA Core: EA 010 PO , EA 020 PO  or EA 086 PZ , and EA 030 PO .

Non-Science Tracks at Pitzer College:

• Must take one (1) additional Natural Science course as part of the EA Core.
• The Environment and Society Track and the Environmental Policy Track require a minimum total of 11 courses, including the four (4) EA Core courses.
• The Sustainability and the Built Environment Track requires a minimum total of 12 courses, including the four (4) EA Core courses.
• Must enroll in the Pitzer EA Senior Thesis Seminar and complete a Senior Thesis in EA.

Non-Science Tracks at Pomona College:

• Must take at least seven (7) and no more than 11 courses in addition to the 3-course EA Core
• Senior Thesis and Seminar at Pomona

All EA majors must complete an EA Senior Thesis and Seminar in close consultation with their First and Second Readers, whom they should choose prior to the end of their Junior Year. First and Second Readers are usually faculty members in the chosen Track or faculty doing related work.
