Economics Major


Requirements for the Major


A major in Economics requires a minimum of 11 courses including senior thesis. If pursuing a dual major, 10 courses including thesis are required.

Prerequisite:

Economics


Note:

Prerequisite and core courses should be completed at Scripps. Students planning to study abroad are urged to complete core courses beforehand.

Electives


The Economics major requires five additional elective courses in economics; at least three of those electives must have an intermediate theory (ECON101 SC  or ECON102 SC ) prerequisite and at least two of the five electives must be taken at Scripps. Note:Completion of ECON XXX SC – Research Methods in Economics prior to spring semester of senior year is required for students interested in being considered for honors in Economics.

Dual Majors


A student wishing to complete a dual major in Economics and any other field must fulfill the Economics major requirements listed above with the following exception:

  • The student must complete four (rather than five) electives; at least two with an intermediate theory prerequisite.

 

Mathematical Economics


A major in Mathematical Economics requires a minimum of 15 courses including a senior thesis.

Note:

Unless otherwise specified, prerequisites and core courses should be completed on the Scripps campus. Students planning to study abroad are urged to complete core courses beforehand.

Electives


Three additional courses in Economics, all three must have an intermediate theory (ECON101 SC  or ECON102 SC ) prerequisite and at least one of them must be taken at Scripps. Note: Completion of ECON XXX SC – Research Methods in Economics prior to spring semester of senior year is required for students interested in being considered for honors in Mathematical Economics.

Honors Requirements


Requirements for honors in Economics or Mathematical Economics:

  1. A grade point average in the major of at least 3.67.
  2. Completion of ECON XXX SC - Research Methods in Economics prior to spring semester of senior year. 
  3. A grade of A- or better on a two-semester thesis ( ECON191 SC  and ECON191H SC ). Students will receive an In Progress grade for ECON191 in Fall semester; their final grade for the two semesters will be determined at the conclusion of ECON191H in Spring semester.
  4. A successful oral defense of the thesis before the economics faculty and the thesis readers in Spring semester.

Students interested in being considered as a candidate for honors should consult with their economics thesis readers during the second semester of their junior year and again during the first semester of their senior year.
