Requirements for the Major
A major in Environment, Economics, and Politics requires a minimum of 12 courses including a senior thesis (*12 courses if dual major as detailed below). The following courses (or equivalents) are required:
1. Core Requirements (6-7 courses)
Choose one of the following three tracks:
Track 1
Track 2
Track 3
2. Elective Courses (7 courses)
Choose two additional courses from two groups below and three courses from one group. At least one course from Group 3 must include a lab. Selection of these, equivalent, or alternate elective courses should be discussed with the major advisor and faculty in the relevant discipline. Students may not count multiple classes with the same topical focus towards the major requirements, for example classes in U.S. Environmental Policy taught in different departments. Either POLI 120 SC or POLI 150 SC may be counted as a Group 1 elective, but not double counted to fulfill both the Core requirement and an elective.
Group 1
(Note that GOVT courses at CMC require the equivalent of GOVT120 CMC or POLI120 SC as a prerequisite).
Group 2
- EINC102 SC Intermediate Macroeceonomic Theory
- ECON120 SC Statistics
- ECON125 SC Econometrics
- Level II Economics elective courses (Upper level economics electives are ECON courses that require ECON101 SC and/or ECON102 SC as a prerequisite).
Group 3
3. Senior Thesis
EEP majors must complete a senior thesis in one of the three constituent disciplines (Economics, Politics, or Natural Sciences). The timing and structure of thesis varies across the three disciplines, so students should consult early with their academic advisors to ensure they enroll in the appropriate courses.Students who plan to complete a thesis in Economics are encouraged to take ECON 120 SC Statistics and ECON125 SC Econometrics to fulfill two of their Group 2 elective requirements. Students who plan to complete a thesis in Natural Sciences are encouraged to take BIOL 175 KS Biostatistics to fulfill a Group 3 elective requirement.
Prerequisites for EEP Majors
The following course is a prerequisite for major requirements (and may be counted for general education requirements):
Dual Majors
*Students with a dual major in EEP must complete a minimum of 12 courses including a senior thesis, distributed as follows:
- Core requirements (6-7 courses, see above)
- Elective courses (5 courses, see above): Choose two courses from two groups and one course from one group. At least one course from Group 3 must include a lab.
- Senior Thesis: Either a one- or two-semester senior thesis
Students are precluded from pursuing a dual major in Environment, Economics, and Politics (EEP) and the following disciplines: Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Environmental Analysis, and Politics.
Honors Requirements
A student who is majoring in Environment, Economics and Politics may apply for honors if the student has a minimum grade point average in the major of 3.67. This includes all the courses counted toward the major. An A or A- must also be earned on the Senior Thesis. The student should inform the Scripps EEP advisor of intention, preferably by the latter part of the student’s junior year.
The honors candidate who fulfills these criteria is required further to defend the senior thesis before the thesis readers, plus two additional faculty representatives—one from the Department of Natural Sciences and another from either the politics or economics department at Scripps. It will be the responsibility of the student, once accepted for honors candidacy, to make all arrangements for the defense.
