Requirements for the Major
- Eight courses above FREN033 SC Intermediate French or equivalent, four of which must be taken at CMC or Scripps. Exceptions must be approved by a French adviser. The eight courses must include FREN 100 , as well as at least one course pertaining to a period prior to the year 1900. (These courses are identified by an asterisk here .)
- At least one semester in France (or other francophone country). Courses taken in France, up to a maximum of four, may be counted towards the French Studies major. However, French language courses taken abroad qualify for the major requirement only if they are at the upper-division level. All others count as an elective.
- Senior thesis.
Honors Requirements
As early as the first semester of the sophomore year, a student, upon consultation with the French faculty, may choose to become a candidate for the Honors Program in French studies. The Honors Program includes the normal course requirements as stated above, as well as a two-semester thesis followed by a successful thesis defense before the French faculty. There is a GPA requirement of A- (11.0) in the major and a senior thesis grade requirement of A– (11.0). |
