HIST 103A CM - From Village to Empire: The History of the Roman Republic, 750-44 BCE This course explores the history of Rome from its foundations as a small village in the middle of the 8th century BCE to its establishment as an imperial power over the Mediterranean world through the 1st century BCE. Rome’s expansion from a city-state to a world power and the social, political and economic implications of this expansion will constitute the primary focus of the course. But we will also examine material culture, religion, social customs, sub-elites and women, and the dynamics of cultural interaction in the ancient Mediterranean. First part of the sequence on Roman history.
