CORE 003 SC - The Twentieth-Century Music Schism In this course, students will reflect upon the origin of discrete (yet artificial) musical categories, including classical, popular, and contemporary music. The separation between art music and popular culture was largely caused by radical changes in the function/conceptualization of musical art in the early twentieth century. Through the study of representative works by composers such as Schoenberg, Stravinsky, and Weill––and by examining how these works were interconnected with developments in the fields of dance, theater, literature, philosophy, psychology, politics, and history––we will revisit the categories that continue to shape our understanding of music, art, and popular culture in contemporary society.
