CORE 003 SC - Creating and Recreating Genji Written in the 11th century by Lady Murasaki Shikibu as a fictional account of Japanese court life, The Tale of Genji has influenced Japanese literature and the visual and performing arts for over a 1000 years. This course will examine the original text and then explore various new versions, focusing on how the text has been recreated by later generations, through Buddhist interpretations in 14th century noh plays, working class satires in 17th century short stories, political parodies in 19th century prints, imperialist propaganda in the early 20th century and social commentary in late 20th century movies, anime and manga.
