CORE 002 SC - Shakespeare and Selfhood What is the self, and in what ways does Shakespeare script our modern understanding of what makes us who we are? We’ll examine the playwright’s treatment of the identities and events that shape and disrupt selfhood: gender and sexuality (Twelfth Night), psyche and consciousness (Hamlet), trauma and anxiety (Macbeth), the strange and sometimes bloody pull of community and nation (Henry V), and the tension between civility and savagery (The Tempest). Plays will be paired with theoretical texts to draw a complex picture of our interior natures and our exterior roles as participants in, and challengers to, our society.
