CORE 003 SC - Education and Inequality Education was once regarded as the great equalizer, providing students from a variety of backgrounds with the opportunity to better themselves and achieve a higher degree of success than their parents. These beliefs are increasingly challenged by the data, as children’s academic success increasingly appears to track their parents’ social status. We will consider this conundrum closely, asking what reforms might make it possible for education to live up to its unfulfilled potential. Our focus will be on the U.S. experience since the mid-20th century, but we will frame this examination both comparatively and historically.
