CORE 002 SC - Troubles in Paradise: Brazil Through Ethnography & Fiction Brazil is often imagined as a natural and social paradise, home to a people composed of the best of the “three races” that met there. Frontier and urban violence and the realities of slavery and its enduring legacy of racism, sexism, and poverty belie this image. This course explores the ways themes of inequality and disillusion are represented in ethnographic writing and Brazilian fiction. Students will learn to analyze ethnographic writing as a literary genre bound by rules and conventions and to read novels anthropologically, that is, to look for ways that sociocultural context shapes and is reflected in fiction.
