CORE 002 SC - Geographies of Militarization We explore how militarization and the waging of covert and overt wars have been “normalized” in U.W. society and culture. Organized violence, steeped in the histories of settler colonialism and slavery, continues through U.S. military imperial forms that operate as “business as usual.” Using antiracist feminist and queer critiques, we examine geographies of militarization-zones in which security, surveillance, and military buildup are imagined, spatialized, and enacted-in historically contextualized, site-specific, but also mundane ways. This includes analyses of media, the prison industrial complex, the language of borders, migration/immigration, urban “revitalization,” disaster relief, universities, public health, and so on.
