Computers and computation have become a vital part of our society and culture. Computer Science encompasses both the theoretical understanding and the practical implementation of computational ideas. The Computer Science minor gives students a fundamental understanding of computers and some proficiency in computer programming and data management. The Scripps Computer Science minor has a solid foundation in programming and mathematics, while allowing students to explore subfields of the discipline and/or connections to other areas of study.
This minor is for students who wish to develop some competence in Computer Science while pursuing a major in another field. The CS minor requires the completion of six courses. No prior programming experience is required.
The student must maintain a minimum GPA, as specified by the program, in the courses used to complete the minor.
Learning outcomes for Computer Science minor:
Students will:
-
Critically evaluate the range of practical Computer Science techniques.
-
Learn a variety of practical Computer Science strategies for parsing and visualizing data.
-
Communicate effectively by organizing information for written reports and presentations.
-
Analyze problems and apply computational principles to identify solutions.
-
Apply fundamental programming techniques.
-
Apply computer science under the ethical principles of the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM).
Computer Science Major (off-campus major):
The Computer Science major may be available to Scripps students through Harvey Mudd College and Pomona College. Students interested in pursuing computer science should contact the department chairs at Pomona College and Harvey Mudd College as early as possible in their academic career. Scripps students who declare this major must complete a senior thesis. In addition to having a faculty major adviser in this discipline, Scripps students must maintain a primary Scripps faculty adviser.
Students interested in majoring in Computer Science through Harvey Mudd College must refer to that College’s guidelines for off campus majors. Please refer to the Harvey Mudd College Catalog and Pomona College Catalog for major requirements. A minor at Harvey Mudd and Pomona is not available to Scripps students.
