Theatre Major

Requirements for the Major


Theatre majors may choose one of the following emphases: General Theatre, Performance, Design, or Dramaturgy/Playwriting (history, theory, and dramatic literature).

Core Courses: 8.5 Credits


  1. Introduction to Acting; or THEA 004 PO - Theatre for Social Change ; or THEA 005 - Introduction to Chicano Theatre and Performance;
  2. Visual Arts of the Theatre;
  3. One course in Mime, Modern Dance and/or Ballet THEA 013 PO - Corporeal Mime  (half course) or THEA 014 PO - Corporeal Mime and Pedagogy  or DANC 076A SC - Modern Dance I  or DANC 076B SC - Modern Dance I  at Scripps (or 010A or B at Pomona or equivalent); and/or DANC 078A  or DANC 078B  at Scripps (or Dance 12A or B at Pomona or equivalent). (This requirement may be met by one full-credit course, or a combination of two half-courses, which can be in a single subject, or spread out among two of the three above.)
  4. THEA 020A PO - Theatre Crafts: Costumes, Scenery and Properties  or THEA 020B PO - Theatre Crafts: Lighting and Sound ;
  5. Two of THEA 110 PO - World Theatre and Drama from Origins to 17th Century , THEA 111 PO - World Theatre and Drama from Kabuki to Ibsen , THEA 112 PO - Theatre and Drama: From Ibsen to the Absurd , and THEA 113 PO - Contemporary Western Theatre: From the Absurd to the Present  THEA 115 PO - Theatre and Dance of Asia   series and one of the THEA 115 PO - Theatre and Dance of Asia  series (Theatre History and Dramatic Literature);
  6. THEA 189H PO - Dramatic Theory and Criticism  (half-course);
  7. THEA 191H PO - Senior Thesis  (half-course);
  8. All majors must complete four production crew assignments by graduation (THEA 051C  or THEA 052H ).

Additional Required Courses


  1. General Theatre Emphasis: Completion of all core courses listed above. THEA 191H , must be taken as full credit.
  2. Performance Emphasis: THEA 012 PO - Intermediate Acting ; THEA 017 PO - Make-up  (half-course); three credits in advanced acting: either three of the 100 series, or two of the 100 series and performing a lead role in one of the Department’s major productions (199). This second option requires approval of the faculty as whole; and THEA 192H PO - Senior Project in Performance  (half-course); one–half course or the equivalent THEA 053C-G PO - Alexander Technique In Motion ; one-half course or the equivalent THEA 054C PO - Voice for the Actor .
  3. Design Emphasis: THEA 017 PO - Make-up  (half-course); THEA 020A PO - Theatre Crafts: Costumes, Scenery and Properties , THEA 020B PO - Theatre Crafts: Lighting and Sound  (whichever course not taken as part of core requirements above); THEA 080 PO - Scene Design for Stage and Screen ; THEA 081 PO - Costume Design for Stage and Screen ; THEA 082 PO - Lighting Design for Stage and Screen ; one crew assignment required as part of the core above must be as an assistant designer to a member of the permanent faculty in the area or areas of the student’s planned senior project (This assignment is a prerequisite for the Senior Project in Design); and THEA 193H PO - Senior Project in Design . (half-course.)
  4. Dramaturgy/Playwriting Emphasis: Any two of the 110-113 sequence and/or the THEA 113 PO - Contemporary Western Theatre: From the Absurd to the Present  series not already taken as part of the core requirement. All Dramaturgy students must take THEA 115D PO - Theatre and Dance of Asia . Pre-approved courses in other departments may be used in fulfilling these requirements. 140, Writing for Performance; THEA 141 PO - Dramaturgy . A half credit as either an assistant director or a stage manager for a faculty directed production. (THEA 052H  or THEA 019 ), THEA 194H PO - Senior Project in Dramaturgy  (half-course).

Note:


Students majoring in theatre are expected to participate actively in the department production program. Theatre majors are also expected to attend workshops, lectures, and other events sponsored by the department as part of their educational enrichment. Declared theatre majors and minors must take all required courses within the major for letter grade. Academic credit is available for students involved in performance and/or production activities under faculty supervision. (See 051C and 051H, Theatre Performance, and/or 052C and 052H, Theatre Production).
