Science, Technology, and Society Major

Requirements for the Major

A major in Science, Technology, and Society requires a minimum of 13 courses including senior seminar and thesis.

1. Science and technology practice (science and/or engineering): Three courses

• STS is about knowledge-making practices, so students should experience those practices directly. Students must take three courses in one discipline in science, engineering, or mathematics that include at least one course that advances beyond the introductory level.

2. STS 010 HM or STS 010 PO or STS 010 PZ ; Introduction to Science, Technology and Society

3. Context and theory: Three courses

     a.  One historical studies course from :

• STS 080 PO Science and Technology in the Ancient and Medieval Worlds  
• STS 081 PZ Science and Technology in the Early Modern World  
• HIST082 HM Science and Technology in the Modern World  
• HIST083 PZ Introduction to the History of Science 

     b.  One philosophy of science course from:

• PHIL007 PO Discovery, Invention and Progress  
• PHIL103 PO Philosophy of Science: Historical Survey  
• PHIL104 PO Philosophy of Science: Topical Survey  

     c.  One social science approaches course from:

• ANTH111 HM Introduction to the Anthropology of Science and Technology  
• POLI136 PO Environmental Justice and Public Policy    
• POST186 PZ Technology and Politics  
• ANTH114 SC Science, Medicine, Colonialism  
• FGSS183 SC Feminist and Queer Science  

4. Two additional STS courses in a single area: either History, or Philosophy, or Social Sciences.

• This requirement asks students to acquire depth in one of the main disciplinary areas of STS.

5. Two STS electives

• any of the courses in Science, Technology, and Society (below) may be used as an elective.

6.  Senior Seminar and Senior Thesis

• STS 190 PO Senior Integrative Seminar  (offered fall semester only)
• STS 191 SC Senior Thesis  

7. Honors Requirements

 A student who wishes to receive honors in Science, Technology,  and Society must achieve a minimum grade point average of 3.67 in the major and earn an A or A- on the senior thesis.
