Economics Major

Requirements for the Major


A major in Economics requires a minimum of 11 courses including senior thesis. If pursuing a dual major, 10 courses including thesis are required.

Economics


Prerequisite


Note:

Prerequisites and core courses are to be completed at Scripps. Students planning to study abroad are urged to complete core courses beforehand.

Electives


The economics major requires four additional upper-division courses in economics, to include at least two courses with an intermediate theory prerequisite. At least two of the four electives must be taken at Scripps.

Dual Majors


A student wishing to complete a dual major in economics and any other field must fulfill the economics major requirements listed above with the following exception:

  • The student must complete three (rather than four) electives, at least two with an intermediate theory prerequisite.

 

Mathematical Economics


A major in Mathematical Economics requires a minimum of 15 courses including a senior thesis.

Honors Requirements


Requirements for honors in economics or mathematical economics:

  1. A grade point average in the major of at least 11.0 (A-).
  2. A grade of A- or better on a two-semester thesis ( ECON191 SC  and ECON191H SC ). Students will receive an In Progress grade for ECON191 in Fall semester; their final grade for the two semesters will be determined at the conclusion of ECON191H in Spring semester.
  3. A successful oral defense of the thesis before the economics faculty and the thesis readers in Spring semester.

The student interested in being considered as a candidate for honors should consult with the economics adviser during the second semester of the junior year.
