Requirements for the Major
A major in English requires a minimum of 11 courses constituted as follows: Basic Requirements:
One of these five basic courses may be taken off the Scripps campus. The remaining four must be taken at Scripps.
Two British Literature Surveys:
Two American Literature Surveys:
One course in British Literature before 1900
(courses numbered 110 through 149, or an appropriate course at another of the Claremont Colleges)
Four electives:
Up to two of these electives may be courses in creative writing, film, and linguistics. It is recommended but not required that most of these be taken at Scripps. WRIT 100 will count as an elective. Courses in literature not originally written in English do not count toward the English major, except by permission of the English faculty.
Senior Seminar and Senior Thesis:
Must be taken at Scripps. Note:
These minimum requirements leave ample room for further work in literature, and any student planning to do graduate work should follow the course requirements for the Honors Program. Many courses have been arranged on a cycle of rotation to allow for greater diversity in the program. Students planning to go abroad should make sure they will be able to fulfill these requirements. Requirements for the Major (Creative Writing Emphasis)
A major in English with an Emphasis in Creative Writing requires a minimum of 12 courses constituted as follows:
Basic Requirements:
- Two British Literature Surveys: ENGL101A SC and ENGL101B SC
- Two American Literature Surveys: ENGL102A SC and ENGL102B SC
- Three additional courses in literature of any period
Three of these seven basic courses may be taken off the Scripps campus. The remaining four must be taken at Scripps.
Three electives:
Three electives in creative writing, approved by a major adviser. It is recommended but not required that these electives represent a range of genres.
Senior Seminar and Senior Thesis:
Must be taken at Scripps.
Honors Requirements
In addition to completing the following course requirements, a student who wishes to pursue the Honors Program in English must achieve a GPA of 11.0 (A-) in the major, and the thesis must receive a grade of A or A-. The student will be expected to produce a more substantial thesis than those not working on honors, and must apply in writing to the department by the end of junior year, specifying the intended electives used to complete the program. (Transfer students should consult the English Department.) The requirements are 13 courses distributed as follows:

One course in British literature of the Medieval or Renaissance periods
(courses numbered 110 through 129, or an appropriate course at another of the Claremont Colleges)
One course in British literature of the 18th or 19th centuries
(courses numbered 130 through 149) Four electives:
