Requirements for the Major

A major in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies requires a minimum of 11 courses including a senior thesis.

Major requirements

FGSS 026 SC - Introduction to Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies
An Intermediate Feminist or Queery Theory Seminar such as: FGSS036 SC /GWS 036 SC, GWS 180 PO , or FGSS184 SC /GWS 184 SC.
GWS 181 PO - Feminist Community Engagement: Bridging Theory with Praxis (or a GWS course with a feminist community engagement component)
FGSS 189 SC - Feminist & Queer Research Methods: Anti-Racist Perspectives
Four courses that constitute a concentration* in FGSS. Two of the four courses must be upper-division FGSS courses). An upper-division FGSS course is one that requires at least FGSS026 SC /GWS 026 SC as a prerequisite.
One upper-division FGSS course addressing issues of race.
GWS 190 PO - Senior Seminar in Gender and Women’s Studies
FGSS 191 SC - Senior Thesis

Note:

* Concentration to be decided upon in consultation with major adviser. Also, the student’s senior thesis needs to be on a topic related to the concentration. Examples of concentrations include: Gender and Media; Transnational Feminisms; Feminism, Science, and Technology; Gender and Politics; Feminist Forms of Expression; Postcolonial Feminisms; Gender, Feminisms, and the Politics of Representation; Gender and the Environment; Feminist Cultural Studies; Critical Race and Feminist Theories; Gender and the Criminal Justice System

Queer Studies Track

Students in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies can choose to pursue a major track in queer studies. Students choosing the queer studies track are required to complete a total of 11 courses:

FGSS 026 SC - Introduction to Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies
FGSS 036 SC - Introduction to Queer Studies
GWS 181 PO - Feminist Community Engagement: Bridging Theory with Praxis (or an FGS course with a feminist community engagement component)
One upper division FGS course addressing issues of Sexuality and Race.
One Queer Studies Methodologies Course (may include FGSS188 SC or other queer studies courses approved by major adviser)
Four courses that constitute a concentration in Queer Studies (two of the four courses must be upper-division FGS courses). An upper-division FGS course is one that requires at least FGSS026 SC /GWS 026 SC as a prerequisite.
GWS 190 PO - Senior Seminar in Gender and Women’s Studies
FGSS 191 SC - Senior Thesis

Honors Requirements

Qualified students will be encouraged to apply for honors in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies in their junior year. In order to receive honors, a student must notify the department chair in the spring of their junior year and fulfill the following additional criteria:

Maintain an overall GPA of 9.0 or higher; GPA in major of 11.0 (A-) or higher.
Receive an A or A- on a two-semester thesis.
Present thesis work-in-progress for discussion and review by FGS faculty at the end of the fall semester and participate in a thesis defense at the end of the spring semester.
Take two additional Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies courses (for a total of 13 courses).
