Hispanic Studies Major

Requirements for the Major

A major in Hispanic Studies requires a minimum of nine courses including a senior thesis. Students in Hispanic Studies may choose to pursue one of two tracks: Studies in Hispanic Literature or Studies in Hispanic Culture. Study abroad is required.

Hispanic Literature Track

Prerequisite:
SPAN 044 SC - Advanced Spanish: Readings in Literature and Civilization
SPAN 070 SC - Advanced Spanish: Spanish for Science , or equivalent.
One course in Civilization:
SPAN 110 SC - Introduction to Spanish Civilization
SPAN 102 CM - Latin American Culture and Civilization (at CMC) or equivalent (abroad or Pitzer SPAN 152 , SPAN 158 , SPAN 187 ).
One survey literature course:
SPAN 120A SC - Survey of Spanish Literature
SPAN 120B SC - Survey of Spanish Literature
SPAN 125A PO - Survey of Spanish-American Literature
SPAN 125B PO - Survey of Spanish-American Literature or equivalent.
Four literature courses above 100, selected in consultation with the academic advisor.
Two courses selected from the fields of anthropology, art, Chicano/a-Latino/a Studies, economics, history, international relations, literature, music, politics, sociology. Only one of these may be taken in English.
SPAN 191 SC - Senior Thesis taken during the spring of the senior year

SPAN 070 SC - Advanced Spanish: Spanish for Science , or equivalent.
One course in Civilization:
SPAN 110 SC - Introduction to Spanish Civilization
SPAN 102 CM - Latin American Culture and Civilization (at CMC) or equivalent (abroad or Pitzer SPAN 152 , SPAN 158 , SPAN 187 ).
One survey literature course:
SPAN 120A SC - Survey of Spanish Literature
SPAN 120B SC - Survey of Spanish Literature
SPAN 125A PO - Survey of Spanish-American Literature
SPAN 125B PO - Survey of Spanish-American Literature , or equivalent.

Honors Requirements

As early as the first semester of the sophomore year, a student may choose to become a candidate for the Honors Program in Hispanic Studies. The Honors Program includes the normal course requirements, as stated above, as well as a two-semester thesis written in Spanish or English, in the case of a dual thesis, supervised by three faculty readers and followed by a successful thesis defense before the faculty and majors of Hispanic Studies. In order to graduate with Honors in Hispanic Studies, the candidate must have a minimum general GPA of 9.0 and a GPA of 11.0 (A-) or above in Hispanic Studies major. A senior thesis grade of at least A- is required.
