Requirements for the Major
Prerequisite: SPAN 044 , or the equivalent in Portuguese.
The student will build courses around a disciplinary focus while maintaining interdisciplinary breadth. A major in Latin American and Caribbean Studies requires a minimum of 10 courses including a senior thesis.
- Four courses in Latin American offerings in one of the following areas: literature, history, or politics.
- Four elective courses outside the chosen focus, from such fields as anthropology, music, sociology, media studies, or the fields listed above.
Of the eight courses above, one must address the period before 1800.
- HIST 040A or HIST 140B at Scripps, or HIST 031 or HIST 032 at Pomona, which can double as a history course as listed above.
- A Senior Seminar.
- Senior Thesis.
Honors Requirements
Students with a strong interest in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, are encouraged to apply for an Honors Program as early as the first semester of the junior year. Students may also be invited to apply for the program by a faculty member of the department. The final selection will be made at a meeting of the faculty members actively teaching in the program. The Honors Program includes an honors thesis based on a year’s research followed by a successful thesis defense before faculty in Latin American Studies. Students intending to graduate with honors need a minimum cumulative GPA of 9.0 and a GPA of 11.0 (A-) or above in Latin American Studies. There is a senior thesis grade requirement of A– (11.0).
