Requirements for the Major
A major in Mathematics requires a minimum of eight courses plus a senior thesis. Prerequisite courses to not count toward the eight courses required.
Core Requirements
- Linear Algebra.
- Differential Equations.
- Principles of Real Analysis I or Abstract Algebra I.
Electives
The mathematics major requires five additional upper-division courses in mathematics , numbered above 100, to be planned in consultation with the mathematics faculty. Honors Requirements
The Mathematics Department awards honors in the major to exceptional students who meet the following requirements:
- Completion of Abstract Algebra I and Principles of Real Analysis I
- Completion of one of the following two-semester sequences of upper division math courses: 131-132, 131-139, 131-147, 131-180, 151-152, 171-172, 171-174.
- A minimum grade point average of 11.0 (A-) in math courses at the level of Linear Algebra and above
- A minimum grade of A- on the senior thesis and a successful oral defense of the thesis before the math faculty
