Science, Technology, and Society Major

Requirements for the Major

A major in Science, Technology, and Society requires a minimum of 12 courses including senior seminar and thesis.

1. Four “science and technology practice” courses (science and/or engineering).

• One semester of mathematics at the level of first-semester calculus or higher. This requirement may be filled by a comparably advanced course in statistics or principles of computing.
• One semester of a laboratory science.
• Three of the courses must be in one field, count toward a major in that field, or be prerequisites to courses that count toward a major in that field.

2. Four “context and theory” courses.

     a.  Two historical studies courses from :

• STS 080 PO Science and Technology in the Ancient/Medieval Worlds  
• STS 081 PZ Science and Technology in the Early Modern World  
• STS 082 PO History of Science and Technology in the Modern World  

     b.  One philosophy of science course from:

• PHIL007 PO Discovery, Invention and Progress  
• PHIL103 PO Philosophy of Science: Historical Survey  
• PHIL104 PO Philosophy of Science: Topical Survey  

     c.  One “social science approaches” course from:

• ANTH111 HM Introduction to the Anthropology of Science and Technology  
• POLI138 PO Organizational Theory  
• POLI139 PO Politics of Community Design  
• POLI149 PO Science, Technology, and Public Policy  
• STS 010 HM Introduction to Science, Technology and Society  

3.  Two “concentration” courses.

• STS cross-listed courses that relate to the student’s focus in science and/or engineering practice,selected with approval of the adviser.

4.  Senior Seminar and Senior Thesis.
