ENGL 182 SC - Politics and Aesthetics This course examines how art has been used and theorized in relation to society in the West, Africa, and the Middle East. Through reading aesthetic and political theory, as well as exploring literature and art created for political ends (the protest novel, Black Consciousness poetry, Third Cinema) and “apolitical” art (lyric poetry, the experimental novel), students will analyze the conjuncture of the art work and society, and the ways that the “political” and the “beautiful” fluctuate according to poetic and intellectual tradition.
