CORE 003 SC - Bad Writing This course asks students to think critically about the notion of “bad writing.” We will discuss what writers, critics, and teachers have stood to gain by labeling certain styles or writers as “bad” and why some authors have welcomed, even courted, the label. We will look in depth at how different categories of bad writing – including bad language, taboo-breaking, and bad-faith portrayals of race and history – have inflected popular and academic conversations about Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and other novels. And we will research what is at stake in how definitions of “bad writing” continue to change in the present day.
