ECON 144 SC - Economic Development While extreme poverty has been declining over the years due to development policies pursued by low and middle-income countries, a significant percentage of the world’s population continues to live on less than $2 a day. In this class, we will try to understand the economic lives of the poor by focusing on some quantifiable dimensions that characterize poverty. We will use theory to analyze factors that keep people trapped in poverty and identify how policies have impacted outcomes. This course will introduce you to some of the leading journal articles that concentrate on issues of education, health, gender inequality, lack of credit markets, migration, conflict, agricultural transformation, the role of market, and political participation by minorities. Prerequisites: ECON101 SC, ECON120 SC, MATH030 SC.
Prerequisite(s): ECON 051 and ECON 052 . Course Credit: 1.0
