MS 123JT SC - Body Media What happens when the body is the medium is the message? The imbrication of embodiment and mediation is everywhere: from politics to biomedicine, to intimacy and surveillance, to lives lived on smartphones and Zoom. The course is divided into three parts. Part one introduces phenomenological theories of the body. Part two explores bodies in media, including sports, acting, performance art, dance, videogaming, and pornography. Part three turns to bodies as media: as cellular biology; as cultural, genetic and computational code; and as interwoven with nonhuman beings. Specific topics will include impairment, disability, and illness; trauma; and practices of transcendence and healing. Prerequisite: MS 049, MS 050, or MS 051 or permission of instructor. Course is team-taught.
